Abstract/Summary

Detailed magnetic gradiometer survey was undertaken in connection with a proposed renewable energy development on land at Horton Road, Brafield on the Green, Northamptonshire. The survey area totalled c18.5ha. A group of positive linear anomalies was recorded in the middle of the site. This possibly forms a small animal enclosure, or farmstead. Several other positive linear features were also recorded. One of these, at the northern corner of the surveyed area, corresponds to part of a previously identified cropmark of a rectangular enclosure considered to represent an Iron Age-Roman settlement. The other positive linear anomalies elsewhere across the site may be archaeological, but their weak responses and irregular shapes may suggest they are more likely to be natural in origin. A number of discrete positive responses might represent isolated pit features but these are not strong and are difficult to interpret on the basis of form alone. Other features represent possible medieval furrows, modern ploughing and a service running along the southern boundary.
