Abstract/Summary
In May 2014 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried an archaeological investigation via ‘strip, map & sample’ at land off Compton Way, Earls Barton, Northamptonshire (NGR SP 8515 6290). The investigation was commissioned by Phoenix Consulting Archaeology Ltd on behalf of Redrow Homes Ltd and was undertaken in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning permission for the residential development of the site. The investigation revealed nine linear features. Three of these comprised narrow linear gullies positioned in the north-western and south-eastern corners of the excavated area. The remaining six features occurred in two intercutting groups of fairly sinuous features running parallel to one another on a broadly north-east to south-west alignment across the entirety of the excavated area. Dateable artefactual evidence was lacking from these features. A single abraded sherd of Roman pottery was recovered from one of the larger feature. It is possible that this is indicative of the date of these features though it is much more likely that they are of medieval date; they correspond to features recorded during the preceding trial trench evaluation which were assigned a medieval date.
