Abstract/Summary

In May 2016 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation at land at West End, Welford, Northamptonshire (NGR SP 4638 2798). The evaluation was undertaken in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning permission for the construction of four dwellings following demolition of agricultural buildings. The site is situated within the River Avon valley area which has produced Neolithic and Bronze Age flints. Welford may have originated in the early Saxon period and finds of that date and later were found nearby and the site is located on the southern edge of the historic settlement. Therefore the site had a potential for prehistoric, Saxon and medieval archaeological remains. In the event the evaluation revealed no archaeological features or finds. The site contained only modern (20th century) made ground overlying the natural clay.
