Abstract/Summary

A test-pit evaluation was carried out within the area of Crow Hill Scheduled Monument. The work was undertaken in order to assess the impact of an accidental soil strip undertaken within an area of the monument without Scheduled Monument Consent. Two test-pits were excavated within the area that had been subject to soil removal. Both were excavated down to the upper surface of the natural substratum. No archaeological deposits were present, however machine tracks were identified impressed into the natural substratum which confirmed the depth of the accidental soil removal. Two Roman coins were collected from an unstratified context within the re-deposited topsoil/subsoil mix, and a small collection of metal artefacts were recovered during a metal-detector scan of the area of accidental disturbance.
