Abstract/Summary

Archaeological monitoring and investigation was carried out during the preparation of ground for an agricultural grain store at Winwick Grange in proximity to the Scheduled site of Winwick medieval settlement. A very shallow linear hollow was observed to run across the proposed footprint, the course of which was surveyed. The subsequent soil strip revealed traces of the linear feature to be ephemeral feaure showing as gleying of the soil. There were no features present and no artefacts. The excavation of a series of stanchion pits revealed no buried soil horizons below the subsoil. The site did not exhibit any obvious signs of truncation. The area affected by the new building and its access area was surveyed and recorded. It is not possible to infer the past cultural status or function of this part of the landscape from the results of the investigation.
