Abstract/Summary

Allen Archaeology Limited was commissioned to undertake a historic building survey of outbuildings to the rear of Stoneleigh, 9 High Street, Gretton, Northamptonshire, prior to the determination of a planning application for conversion of the outbuildings for residential use. · Stoneleigh and its attendant outbuildings are Grade II Listed, dating to the 18th century, with the main house rebuilt c.1830. The outbuildings comprise a two storey former stables and outbuildings believed to have been used as a parchment works, and later for leatherworking. A two storey stable block has been modernised with new windows and an area fitted out with timber framing and plasterboard to form a utility room. A former washroom has also been subject to recent renovation. To the rear of the stables, the parchment works are derelict and unroofed, covered with overgrowth, and retain no evidence of their former use. The decay of the buildings is ongoing, based on a comparison of the structures with a survey undertaken in 2000. The absence of features associated with the parchment industry indicates that the value of the site lies within its historical association with the industry, rather than the survival of structural elements of historical interest.
