Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of ten trial trenches, was undertaken by AC Archaeology Ltd in the area of the proposed Daventry District Council Site 1 Development Area, north of the High Street, Daventry in November and December 2008. The investigation was undertaken to assess the archaeological potential of the area prior to any future development. The area lies within the Historic Settlement core of the town, as defined in the Extensive Urban Survey, and is considered likely to contain archaeological deposits of County archaeological significance. The trenches revealed a variety of subsoil deposits including areas of truncation, deep post-medieval disturbance and, in one instance, an in situ medieval feature. No evidence was found for the possible round barrow thought to lie to the south of the library. The data acquired has been used to suggest an archaeological deposit model for the area.
