Abstract/Summary

In July 2014, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of a proposed pumping station site at Stamford Road, Welford, Northamptonshire. Four trenches were excavated. The Scheduled remains of a Roman villa and the probable alignment of a Roman road are recorded c. 100m west of the site, and evidence of late Iron Age ironstone extraction and smelting is recorded to the north. A previous geophysical survey of the site detected no archaeological anomalies, although unsuitable ground conditions meant that it was not possible to survey the entire site. The archaeological evaluation uncovered no archaeological features or deposits at the site. This is line with the results of the geophysical survey, and indicates that activity associated with the known Iron Age and Roman sites in the region did not extend as far as the proposed development site.
