Abstract/Summary

Archaeological observation, investigation and recording work was carried out during groundworks on the route of the Irthlingborough to Burton Wold underground cable. Archaeological remains were uncovered on the south-eastern edge of Irthlingborough belonging to a former late 19th to early 20th-century brickworks and later tannery. These consisted of brick and concrete walls and a brick floor. A possible tramway cut a nearby refuse dump. The finds all dated to this period and came mainly from the refuse pit, which included several hundred domestic bottles and glass containers, stoneware bottles, a stoneware hot water bottle and a First World War British army cap badge. No archaeological features were encountered elsewhere on the route.
