Abstract/Summary
The house appears to date from the 18th century, a time when Astrop Spa was growing popularity. It is built of coursed limestone in vernacular style and may have started life as a farmhouse. It has undergone several phases of remodelling since then, to extend it and gentrify its appearance. The observed evidence suggests that the earliest building was a two-storey double pile vernacular house. The first major change is marked by the creation of usable living space in the attics of both piles and the associated gentrification of the building, probably in the early 19th century. The second saw the extension of the building to the north and the creation of a link to the former bakehouse to the east, together with the general reordering of the the interior, in the later 19th century. The most recent changes have been associated with the conversion of the building for use as a residential care home in the latter half of the 20the century, and the creation of seven self-contained flats and warden's accomodation.
