Abstract/Summary

Allen Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Mr Charles Gamble to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording during the groundworks for the conversion of an outbuilding for residential use and formation of a new access at Stoneleigh, 9 High Street, Gretton, Northamptonshire. The site lies within an area of archaeological potential. The village of Gretton has evidence of later prehistoric and Roman activity, and during the medieval period was a royal estate, with Gretton manor believed to be very extensive. The current property is a Grade II listed building dating to the 18th century with its outbuildings believed to have been used as a parchment works and by the leather trades up until the 1960s. The archaeological monitoring recorded a sequence of modern layers of made ground and dumped deposits overlying the superficial geology. The groundworks did not reveal any layers or features of archaeological significance.
