Abstract/Summary

This document provides the results of observation, investigation, recording and analysis following groundworks for new paths and flower beds adjacent to the eastern elevation of Deene Park. The work revealed the presence of disarticulated human remains including skulls and long bones in the topsoil as well as the partial remains of an articulated skeleton in situ within a grave cut. The loose bones were mixed within the topsoil and there was no dating evidence for the in situ burial; however the location of the skeletal remains close to the site of a demolished medieval chapel makes an association between the remains and the early chapel likely. It is probable that the loose charnel was the result of previous intact burials being disturbed when the chapel, surrounding terrace and some overburden were removed to level the ground in the 18th century.
