Abstract/Summary
MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) was invited to undertake an archival search and map regression exercise with the aim of detailing the historic and physical development of Buttermilk Hall Farm, a non-listed farmhouse with associated barn and stables. This work has shown that the buildings can be dated to at least the early to mid-18th century and that the historic core of the farms which comprised an L-plan range still survives with later 19th-century and modern additions. From the mid-18th century up to the mid-20th century the property was known as Buttermilk Hall and is recorded as having served as a game keeper’s lodge in the late-19th century. This report examines the building in isolation, with little reference to the wider development of the parish, and any future examination would benefit from placing the farm within its social and historical context.
