Because of its value it has not been possible to tell anyone until it had been transferred to the diocesan vaults at Peterborough for safe keeping. No-one knew the secret under that leaking roof! On removing the lead from the roof a cache of 17th century coins together with some Charles I gold jewellery were found, presumably buried out of reach of the encroaching Parliamentarian troops. "I found this small package wrapped in a bit of old oil cloth. When I opened it , I couldn't believe my eyes!" said the builder.
