Abstract/Summary

In July 2015 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation on land to the rear of Nos. 1-4 Brackley Field Cottages, Halse Road, Brackley, Northamptonshire (NGR SP 5831 3858). The evaluation was commissioned by Heenans Developments Ltd and was undertaken in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning permission for the construction of four dwellings. The site had a potential for archaeological remains of prehistoric, and Saxon to post-medieval date. A Middle Iron Age settlement was excavated to the north/north-east centred on 500m away, which included an enclosure ditch, roundhouses, pits, post holes, gullies and evidence of metalworking. A probable Neolithic pit was also excavated 150m to the north-east of the site. Halse Road forms the boundary between two medieval open field systems associated with Brackley. Extensive field walking in the area has recovered Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery, and ridge and furrow has been identified. In the event the evaluation revealed no archaeology excepting a small modern pit.
