SNN111669 - Land west of Polwell Lane (Field 3), Barton Seagrave, Northamptonshire: Archaeological excavation and investigation & recording: Research Archive report

Between October 2013 and October 2016, Archaeological Solutions Ltd conducted an archaeological excavation and investigation & recording on land to the west of Polwell Lane, Barton Seagrave, Northamptonshire (Field 3). The project was commissioned by Phoenix Consulting Archaeology Ltd (on behalf of Redrow Homes) in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning permission for the residential development of the site and associated works. Known sites and findspots in the surrounding area and previous work within the current development site suggested that Field 3 had good potential to reveal multi-period archaeological remains, particularly features and deposits dating to the later prehistoric, early Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon periods. The excavation encountered a multi-period settlement landscape spanning the late Iron Age to Anglo-Saxon periods. The Iron Age to early Romano-British transition was defined by a semi-enclosed landscape including a number of discrete pit clusters (including storage pits) and a well-preserved semi-subterranean structure. The Romano-British site, dating between the 1st and mid 2" centuries AD, was defined by rectilinear ditched enclosures and trackways. Pit digging continued into this phase of occupation and several wells were also encountered. Anglo-Saxon activity was represented by the remains of three sunken-featured buildings.
