Abstract/Summary

Allen Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Ian Pick Associates to undertake a geophysical survey using magnetometry on land off Bedford Road, Rushden, Northamptonshire, in order to inform a future planning application for new poultry units. The site lies in an area of archaeological interest, with evidence for prehistoric and Roman activity in the vicinity of the site. The site also lies on the edge of a medieval deer park, with a shrunken medieval village to the southeast. The geophysical survey has revealed very little of archaeological interest. A positive linear feature at the northeast end of the survey relates to a former field boundary, with an adjacent area of magnetic noise representing a former pond, both of which appear on historic mapping. There are a number of potential positive linear features within the surveyed area, either aligned roughly northwest to southeast, or northeast to southwest. These are likely to represent former cultivation trends, and/or modern tractor tracks. The survey has suggested that the archaeological potential of the site is negligible.
