Abstract/Summary
A desk-based assessment was carried out on behalf of Wellingborough Borough Council, prior to a proposed new development at Cannon Street, Wellingborough. There is no evidence for medieval or earlier settlement remains in the site – the site is outside the medieval town, and has been agricultural land since at least 1803, though the field boundaries have been swept away. In the mid 19th century the East End Iron Works may have operated on the site for several years before being dismantled, though it is unlikely that any remains have survived below later building. Some of the buildings of The County of Northampton Electric Power and Traction Company Ltd are present, although these have undergone subsequent alteration. Recommendations have been put forward for archaeological mitigation works.
