Abstract/Summary
Groundworks Archaeology was commissioned by Ms Angela Martin to undertake an archaeological building survey of agricultural buildings at “The Woodyard”, Hulcote. (NGR SP 74066 50043,Fig 1). The work was carried out in May 2017 in response to a proposed scheme of conversion. This assessment included a photographic survey as well as field notes and annotations and amendments to existing architects drawings. Evidence for structural alterations and changes in fabric were recorded in order to determine a sequence of historic development. This recording survey and map regression has demonstrated that the barn is of early to mid 19th century date, and is likely to have been built by the 3rd Earl of Pomfret between 1806 and 1827 during a phase of remodelling around the green at Hulcote. It is likely that the barn was built to serve the adjacent Manor Farm and based on the open bays was intended to hold livestock. The Tithe map shows that the barn had a southern projection at the western end which is shown in more detail on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map (figure 8). This wing burnt down in the 1960's and only part of the outer wall survives which forms the western boundary of the present “courtyard”. The structure has been altered over its lifetime with the western most bays being partially enclosed, as has also happened with the eastern most bays adjacent to the carriageway. The structure has also been re-roofed, probably in the early to mid 20th century. The evolution of the building is typical of that of agricultural buildings, with the structure being adapted to current needs. The Easton Neston estate was historically impoverished and this is reflected in the often crude alterations visible within the structure.
