Abstract/Summary

This Desk-based Assessment was commissioned by Stamford Homes Limited and carried out by Cambridgeshire County Council’s CAM ARC (formerly the Archaeological Field Unit) on the 29th June and 4th July 2007. The study attempts to define the archaeological potential of land to the east of Church Street, Irthlingborough (SP 9481 7070), in advance of a proposed residential development. The development area is a large irregular plot of land measuring 0.65ha and lies within the historic core of Irthlingborough and immediately adjacent to St Peter’s Church. The land has good potential for the discovery of archaeological remains from the Iron Age to post-medieval period, although the level of truncation is as yet unclear. Excavations nearby at Lime Street (Chapman et al 2003) give the strongest indication of the date and type of potential archaeological remains and this is supported by the various spot finds around the town.
