Abstract/Summary

Archaeological observation and recording accompanied ground-works for the erection of two houses behind the gardens to the north of Grasscroft, Long Buckby. The works recorded a controlled section across most of a former hollow-way, possibly originally the nearby castle bailey ditch, but which was not filled in until at least the 19th century. This former thoroughfare was traced for a distance of over 40m. Elsewhere medieval ditches appear to have emptied into this feature from the south while other undated gulleys or trenches may have been related to horticulture. Some 95% of the hollowway has been preserved under the recent development.
