Abstract/Summary

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) conducted an archaeological deskbased heritage assessment of Middlemore Site 8E, Daventry, Northamptonshire. The site lies on the northern limits of Daventry, within the wider Middlemore Farm development and beyond the historic core of the town. There are two Grade II Listed Buildings, Middlemore Farmhouse and Middlemore Farm buildings which lie to the north-east of the site. There are no further Listed Buildings, Scheduled Monuments, Registered Battlefields or Registered Parks and Gardens within the 500m Historic Environment Record (HER) search radius of the site. The proposed development lies partially within a possible area of Roman activity and a Roman settlement and farmstead dating from the 1st – 3rd centuries AD lies to the north-east of Site 8E. Ridge and furrow is present within parts of the Middlemore development including adjacent to the west of the site at Plot 8W, to the north-west in Plot 9 and is likely to extend into the site. Cartographic evidence suggests the site has remained undeveloped since the 17th century although the surrounding landscape has undergone substantial changes, including the construction of the Grand Junction Canal, the Great North Western Railway, the creation of Drayton Fields industrial estate and residential development to the north and south of Drayton Reservoir.
