Abstract/Summary

This report presents the results of an archaeological trial trench evaluation undertaken at 15 Main Street, Upper Benefield, Northamptonshire. Four trenches were opened, recording a possible quarry pit, a modern ditch and modern rubble from the recently removed building. The possible quarry pit is still visible as earthworks in the adjacent field. The fill of the quarry pit contained modern rubble probably originating from modern backfilling to level out the site, making it difficult to date when the quarry it was originally cut. A modern south-west to north-east ditch was recorded in Trench 1. This possibly resolves as a drainage ditch or boundary ditch, which was most likely dug while the farm buildings were still in use.
