Abstract/Summary
An Archaeological Watching Brief was carried out at The Cordwainer, The Ridings, in Northampton. The watching brief was implemented because of the potential for archaeological remains on the site. The work was carried out by Pascal Eloy of L – P : Archaeology. This report has been prepared by Rachael Matthews of L – P : Archaeology on behalf of RJD. The site is currently used as gardens to a public house. There are no assets within the site, however, it lies within an area of potential for Saxon remains and within the historic Medieval core of Northampton, in an area noted as Gobion Manor (MNN8798). The objectives of the watching brief were to establish whether any archaeological remains were present on the site and to appropriately record the deposits and features; collecting palaeo-environmental samples if relevant. The archaeological watching brief identified modern and late Post Medieval soils of predominantly redeposited sandy silts. No historic features were encountered and the two artefacts retrieved, a sherd of Medieval ceramic and a coin sating to 1922, are thought to be residual. There remains potential for surviving archaeology below 1.5m, however, none was encountered during the works monitored.
