Abstract/Summary
Bournemouth Archaeology, Bournemouth University’s archaeological consultancy, was commissioned by Anesco Ltd. to undertake a geophysical survey as part of a programme of archaeological work required as a condition of planning consent in respect of a renewable energy project using photovoltaic collectors at Land East of Banbury Lane, Culworth Grounds Farm, Thorpe Mandeville (NGR 454410, 245475). This non-invasive survey was carried out over an area of approximately 7.7ha in an attempt to map the extent of any sub-surface archaeological features. The survey was undertaken using the Bartington Grad 601-2, twin sensor array, vertical component fluxgate gradiometer in order to complete a full gradiometer survey of the area, which comprised one large field surrounded by hedge row on the north, east and south sides. A metal fence was positioned along the western side of the survey area. The survey has identified numerous features of probable archaeological significance. A number of linear anomalies were recorded across the survey area. These may be associated with, and extensions of, the cropmarks which have been identified to the northwest and southeast of the survey area. A number of discrete, positive responses typically caused by in-filled cut features were also recorded and may represent pits of an archaeological origin, possible tree bowls or other naturally occurring depressions in the ground. Ferrous responses were recorded throughout the survey area and are likely to represent small ferrous objects in the plough soil, while a series of weak positive trends are interpreted as representing agricultural features, such as plough furrows or drainage features. This report comprises the final report on the findings of the survey.
