Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Amey Consulting to undertake an archaeological watching brief during the removal of a works compound and reinstatement of the ground located on a scheduled monument, namely the site of the Roman town at Irchester. The monitored works cover an area of 0.15 ha centred on NGR 492071 267255, at Irchester Viaduct, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. No archaeological features or deposits were discovered during the watching brief. A small finds assemblage was recovered; this comprised everyday material (pottery, tile, glass etc) of 19th to 20th-century date and derived entirely from the topsoil. The watching brief was successful in meeting its aims and objectives, and was not affected by any limitations (access, visibility, weather etc) that may have served to undermine confidence in its conclusions.
