Abstract/Summary

MOLA undertook an archaeological geophysical survey of c.40ha of land to the north-west of Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire, in advance of the construction of the A361 Chipping Warden relief road. This survey area lies in Community Forum Area(CFA)15, between Greatworth and Lower Boddington. The survey identified various remains of probable prehistoric to Roman date, including an enclosure complex, a ring ditch, a small square enclosure and several linear ditches. Medieval to early post-medieval ridge and furrow was also detected, as were more recent agricultural remains, including old field boundaries, an allotment track and a pond. Much of the survey are a lay on the former RAF Chipping Warden Airfield; consequently the survey also encountered some Second World War military remains including the footings of a former radar workshop.
