Abstract/Summary
Magnitude Surveys was commissioned to assess the subsurface archaeological potential of a c.0.23ha area of land at Barn Farm, Weston by Welland, Northamptonshire. A fluxgate gradiometer survey at 0.5m intervals was successfully completed across the survey area. The geophysical survey has primarily detected anomalies of possible archaeological and agricultural origin. Evidence of possible archaeological activity has been identified in the form of an in-situ burning anomaly, suggestive of an oven or burned pit. Further possible archaeological anomalies have been identified as linear anomalies and a series of possible stakeholes, which could relate to the known Roman marching camp that the site lies within. A spread of anomalies caused by undetermined material in the topsoil has been identified across the area. Classification has remained tentative as a modern or natural origin is as likely as an archaeological one for this material. Magnetic disturbance is mainly limited to the boundaries of the survey area.
