Abstract/Summary

In September 2020 an archaeological investigation was carried out by Souterrain during groundwork for a new dwelling on a plot of land (c. 1,640 sq. m) in the grounds attached to Garden House, Birds Hill Road, Eastcote, Northamptonshire. Based primarily on the historic origins of Eastcote and occasional archaeological discoveries in and around the village, the site was considered to have potential for buried remains of medieval and postmedieval date. There was also the possibility of remains from a prisoner of war camp of The Great War. The investigation uncovered no archaeological evidence of the medieval period, although a relict fragment of medieval/ post-medieval ridge and furrow was noted in the north-western corner of the Application Site; which was left undisturbed. Ground reduction and investigation took place over an area of c.782 sq. m. The entire area had previously suffered disturbance, most probably from later 20th century landscaping for the existing house. A single archaeological feature was present, a probable post-hole, possibly of early 20th century date. In addition, a meagre number of pottery sherds of late post-medieval to modern date were present in the topsoil.
