Abstract/Summary
During August 2019, Benchmark Archaeology (BA) undertook a programme of Archaeological Observation, Investigation, Recording, Analysis And Publication Of Works (hereinafter AWB) on land at 11 Showsley Road, Shutlanger, Northamptonshire, NN12 7RW (NGR: 472591 249841, Figures 1 - 3). The work was commissioned and funded by Cornerstone 2 Ltd. Planning permission was by South Northamptonshire Council for the construction of a new dwelling on the site (Planning Ref: S/2019/0144/FUL). The site lies within an area of archaeological potential. Due to the archaeological potential of the site the Assistant Archaeological Advisor (AAA), Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) recommended that a programme of AWB be undertaken on the site during groundworks with the potential to expose, truncate or destroy deposits of archaeological significance. Prior to the fieldwork a Project Design (Cherrington 2019) specifying the methodology to be employed during the AWB was produced and submitted as a requirement of planning permission. The AWB was successful in its aim of providing a written, drawn and photographic record of the deposits encountered during development. A single archaeological feature (F105) was recorded comprising a truncated probable boundary ditch of 16th Century date containing pottery and tile fragments. This confirms early Post-medieval activity at the western extent of the settlement at Shutlanger (4753 - MNN6202). The remaining recorded features (F102, F103 and F104) were modern in date. No further features or deposits of archaeological significance were recorded and no further finds were recovered. The archive will be deposited with the Archaeological Resource Centre (ARC) in line with the document entitled ‘Northamptonshire Archaeological Resource Centre: Archaeological Archives Standard January 2020’ (NCC 2020). An OASIS form has been completed and appears in Appendix 1.
