Abstract/Summary
Magnitude Surveys was commissioned to assess the subsurface potential of c. 4.5ha area of land at Woolgrowers Field, Towcester, Northamptonshire. A fluxgate gradiometer survey was successfully completed across the whole survey area. The survey identified linear and discrete anomalies which are archaeological in origin. Linear anomalies interconnect or abut each other to form orthogonal patterns creating a partial enclosure system. These anomalies run along the eastern boundary and are possibly Romano-British in date. The survey also detected agricultural anomalies identified as ridge and furrow cultivation, as well as linear anomalies which collocate with mapped field boundaries. Similarly, anomalies relating to magnetic disturbance and an area of ferrous debris, along the northern boundary, correspond to mapped structural features. Natural variations correspond with the topography of the survey area and anomalies of an undetermined classification have been recorded. The impact of modern activity on the results is limited to the boundaries of the survey area and a ferrous debris spread that respects former field boundaries, but also corresponds with a spoil heap identified on satellite imagery.
