Abstract/Summary

Archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in February 2020 on land adjacent to Tithe Barn Way, Swan Valley, Northampton, at the request of RPS Consulting. A total of eighteen trenches, each measuring 30m long by 1.8m wide, were excavated across the site in accordance with a trench plan agreed by RPS Consulting with Northamptonshire County Council in October 2019. The extant earthworks of a northwest-southeast aligned medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow agricultural system were recorded in the south and east part of the site. Evidence for modern landscaping in the form of layers of made ground was encountered in the northwestern and eastern areas of the site, closest to previous development works associated with the adjacent Swan Valley industrial estate. With the exception of an area of the ridge and furrow earthworks, the evaluation identified no other features of archaeological significance, and no artefacts were recovered.
