Abstract/Summary

Interim statement of the results of the archaeological work undertaken on the site. It has been produced to provide an outline picture of the archaeological deposits encountered and the basic phasing. It is to be noted that at this stage the report is based purely on initial site interpretations and not detailed analysis. The programme archaeological ground monitoring and evaluation during the preparatory grounds works at Sponne School, Towcester identified a series of archaeological features associated with the Roman and post medieval development of Towcester. The evaluation work identified evidence of a possible Roman building set within a laid-out area, and a series of post medieval pits and ditches, all truncated by modern development, particularly the construction and subsequent demolition of an open air swimming pool, resulting in the survival of archaeological deposits being concentrated within the northern most part of the development site at approximately 600mm below the existing ground level.
