Abstract/Summary

Pre-construction survey and excavation along the route of the A605 Chesterton/Elton Bypass was undertaken in the spring and summer of 1989, funded by the Transportation Department, Cambridgeshire County Council. Although very little of the archaeology along the route was previously known, significant discoveries of prehistoric settlement and field systems were discovered on the Elton Estates' land that was to be affected by the construction of the bypass. At the Haddon end of the bypass route, about one-quarter of an extensive Roman farmstead was intensively examned, with important implications with respect to the development of the landscape and the economy during the Roman period.
