Abstract/Summary

Planning consent has been given by Northamptonshire County Council for the conversion of the former drill hall in Wellingborough High Street to specialist care residential units and associated purposes (WP/20/00255/FUL). The building, originally a private house probably of the 1860’s, then a girls’ school from the early-1880’s, a private house again in the early-20th century and subsequently a drill hall for the Territorial Army, is not listed but is considered to be a non-designated heritage asset and does sit within the Wellingborough conservation area. The Council approached the archaeological service of Northamptonshire County Council for advice, and they considered that a Level 2 survey of the buildings be undertaken in advance of the consented works. This Consultancy was commissioned to undertake such an archaeological record and assessment to better understand the date, development and significance of the existing site and its setting and to provide a degree of ‘preservation by record’ of the buildings in their present condition.
