Abstract/Summary

MOLA was commissioned to undertake a geophysical survey of c13.5ha of land to the north of Irchester, Northamptonshire, in advance of flood alleviation works for the Wellingborough Stanton Cross development scheme. The survey identified a group of sub-circular enclosures, roundhouses and pits and another group of rectilinear enclosures. It is likely that these remains relate to separate phases of Iron Age and Roman activity on the site. A curving ditch, perhaps part of a very large enclosure, was also identified. Other features detected by the survey included ridge and furrow, palaeochannels, former ironstone quarries and a modern pipeline, the latter lying almost immediately alongside the south-western edge of the survey area.
