Abstract/Summary
A trial trench evaluation was carried out on land at Goulden’s View, Norton, Northamptonshire (NGR: SP 60168 63405) in advance of the proposed development of the land for twelve new dwellings. The land was part of a larger pasture field at the southern end of the village. The Historic Environment Record (HER) for the area around Norton indicated that there were a number of known archaeological remains in the vicinity, including a number of enclosures and boundary ditches, located by geophysical survey and most likely Iron Age/ Romano- British in date. Medieval earthworks are also located around the village and ridge and furrow was visible within the field itself. The site therefore had potential for archaeological remains with the proposed development area. Ridge and furrow earthworks were located within all six evaluation trenches, running broadly north-east to south-west across the site, mirroring those identified on the surface. Two possible archaeological features were revealed during the evaluation but further work showed them to be most likely natural in origin. The archive for the site will be lodged with Northamptonshire Museums with event number ENN109686.
