Abstract/Summary

An archaeological observation and recording exercise was carried out by Groundworks Archaeology between the 29th January and the 8th July 2020 during the groundworks phase of a barn conversion at The Woodyard, Hulcote, Northamptonshire. The programme of observation, investigation and recording revealed a simple stratigraphy within the barn with a concrete floor overlying a layer of makeup which in turn sealed the natural clay. The yard area had been previously reduced with the natural exposed. Only one feature was revealed within the barn a 19th century brick soakaway <105>. A spread of dirty dark bluish clay (103) surrounded this feature which is likely to represent the upcast from its original excavation. This soakaway is likely to date from the early 19th century immediately prior to the construction of the barn which is thought to have been built sometime between 1806-1827 when the green was remodelled by the 3rd Earl of Pomfret. It appears to be linked to Manor Farm which was itself much altered and extended in the early 19th century.
