Abstract/Summary
A trial trench evaluation was carried out on land at Berryfield Road, Cottingham, Northamptonshire (SP 484280 290330) in advance of the proposed development of the land for a new village hall with associated access road and car park. The land formed the north-east corner of a larger recreational area on the north-east edge of the village. The Historic Environment Record (HER) for the area around Cottingham indicated that there were a number of known archaeological remains in the vicinity, including a Roman road, corn drying kilns and iron working evidence to the south of the site. The site therefore had potential for archaeological remains within the proposed development area. Furrows were located within all three evaluation trenches, running broadly north-west to south-east across the site suggesting that this area was previously agricultural fields. No other archaeological deposits were identified during the evaluation. The archive for the site will be lodged with Northamptonshire Museums with event number ENN109887.
