Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation, involving the excavation of eight 30m x 1.8m trial trenches, was carried out on behalf of Mr P. Baker. Geological natural clay was exposed in all trenches and no significant archaeological deposits or finds were recorded. A shallow gully, of probable post-medieval date, was recorded in Trench 5 and a filled-in former stream channel was recorded in Trenches 7 and 8. Traces of shallow northwest-southeast aligned furrows, associated with former medieval to postmedieval ridge and furrow cultivation were also recorded. The evaluation produced no evidence for medieval features associated with the remains of the deserted medieval village of Onley, located to the northeast of the site.
