SNN112619 - Level 2 Historic Building Survey: The Old Coach Yard, 11 Desborough Road, Rothwell

The report presents the results of a programme of historic building recording of The Old Coach Yard, 11 Desborough Road, Rothwell, undertaken by Lloyd Mills. The work has been requested by Kettering Borough Council through condition as part of a grant of planning permission for the redevelopment of the site (reference KET/2019/0748). The site contains a range of former farm buildings that are arranged around a U-shaped courtyard that is open to its east side. The site has been vacant for a number of years, having been used most recently as a coach yard. The buildings that form the site are of simple utilitarian design and vernacular construction. While they may incorporate earlier (and later) fabric, their current form likely dates from the mid-C19, and is most probably contemporary with the rebuilding phase that took place at 11 Desborough Road (circa 1849). The significance of the buildings has been eroded by alterations carried out in the C20 when the site was repurposed as a coach yard. The work carried out involved the alteration of the buildings to form garaging, which caused a substantial loss of historic fabric. This has made it difficult to determine the precise uses of some buildings.
