Abstract/Summary
In September 2020, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation at University of Northampton Avenue Campus, St George’s Avenue, Northampton, in connection with proposals for the redevelopment of the site. Four trenches were excavated with the site area, which was used as a brickworks from the mid-18th through to the 20th century. No evidence for any structural remains or industrial features such as kiln bases was observed during the evaluation, although it is conjectured the extensive made ground deposits encountered in two of the trenches are backfilling former clay extraction pits. Modern deposits and evidence for truncation of the natural clay substrate resulting from the construction of the existing Campus buildings and associated facilities was encountered in the remaining two trenches.
