Abstract/Summary
Archaeological recording (watching brief) was carried out during October 2019 and May 2021 on land at Cedar View, The Broadway, Norton, Northamptonshire, NN11 2NG. Planning permission had been granted for the erection of a detached dwelling with attached garage conditional on a programme of archaeological work during the groundworks. The development lay in an area which has much archaeological potential. A prehistoric burial was found locally in the C19 and near the village is the site of the Roman walled settlement of Bannaventa on Watling Street. The earthwork remains associated with the shrunken medieval village of Norton, lie immediately east of the site. A hollow-way up to 1.75m deep approaches the area from the south-east and then forks; the north-west branch extends as a very shallow depression towards the south end of the existing village and directly towards the development site and the northern edge of this feature is aligned across the footprint of the new dwelling. The excavation revealed no evidence to indicate the remains of the hollow-way although the area has been previously landscaped and any shallow remains associated with this feature are likely to have been graded out during this process.
