Abstract/Summary

Crestwood Environmental Ltd were commissioned by Sponne School (‘the Client’) to undertake a Programme of Archaeological observation, investigation and recording (‘the Investigation’) on land at Sponne School, Brackley Road, Towcester, Northamptonshire– National Grid Reference (NGR) 69050 48760 (‘the Site’) during ground works for the extension of an existing science block (‘the Development’). The work was undertaken following a request a request for a Programme of Archaeological Investigation by Northamptonshire County Council’s (NCC) Senior Archaeological Advisor (SAA). A truncated natural substratum was recorded throughout the investigation area, sealed by up to 3.0m of modern overburden comprising mid brown sandy loam containing numerous unworked fragments of flint animal bone and modern ceramic building material. No pre-modern archaeological remains or artefacts were present. The results of the archaeological investigation confirm that throughout the investigation area the natural substratum has been subject to significant modern truncation primarily associated with the construction of the present school and areas of hardstanding and which would have removed any pre-modern archaeological remains which may have been present within the investigation area. The investigation was undertaken in favourable conditions and there is therefore a high level of confidence in the process and the results.
