Abstract/Summary

This report presents the results of research carried out by Witham Archaeology in relation to proposed development at Compton House, Denton, Northamptonshire, a Grade II Listed property. The report, commissioned by Mr &Mrs Draper, will form part of a submission for planning permission for the construction of a swimming pool annexe, together with internal alterations. The area of the proposed development comprises a terraced area of lawn and garden on the western side of the house, bounded to the west by a low retaining wall up to 1m high. The research indicated that no additional known heritage assets (excepting the structure of Compton House itself and its Listed eastern boundary wall) were located within the bounds of the proposed development. Records of archaeological remains were found to indicate Neolithic occupation and settlement of Iron Age date located within 0.5km of the site, and potential occupation of Romano-British date 240m to the south-east. Four other potential Romano-British settlement sites are recorded at greater distance, and contemporary finds have been recovered from a location around 60m from the site. The development area is at the periphery of the historic core of the Medieval village, away from the probable focus of Medieval occupation.
