Abstract/Summary

Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd was commissioned by Apex Planning Consultants, on behalf of Mr D Bailey, to carry out a programme of historic building recording at Manor Farm, Brampton Ash, Northamptonshire. The farm buildings are not listed, nor do they lie in a Conservation Area. The archaeological building recording programme was required as a condition of planning approval for an application to convert the study buildings into two residential dwellings with single storey extensions (Planning Reference: NK/2021/0760). The study buildings comprised of a stone barn just northwest of the Manor House, and a livestock building abutted by a later cart shed, arranged in a L-shape format, just northeast of the Manor House. The earliest building is the stone barn (Barn A), which was likely a livestock building and was probably constructed in the early 18th century. A livestock building and hayloft (Barns B and C) followed in the early 19th century and a cart shed was adapted (Barn C) toward the end of the 19th Century. Later 20th Century alterations of an open cattle yard, abutting the northern aspect of the livestock building (Barn B), and another building on the eastern aspect of the stone barn (Barn A) are noted on early OS maps. The evolution of the site between the 18th and the 20th centuries follows a typical pattern in response to developments in farming practices and the recommendations of contemporary agricultural commentators.
