Abstract/Summary

This report presents the results of an archaeological strip, map and sample excavation undertaken in advance of residential development at Willow Lane, Stanion, Northamptonshire (491653 286828). The strip, map and sample excavation was undertaken following a previous geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation, which had identified a possible ditch, oriented northwest to southeast as well as quantities of iron production waste. Subsequent stripping of the overburden confirmed the presence of the ditch as well as a further two possible ditches along with features relating to iron smelting, including a furnace. Dating evidence was sparse, although the pottery recovered suggests activity was taking place within the development area between the mid to late Saxon period whilst a small quantity of prehistoric flints and Iron Age pottery also suggests an earlier Iron Age phase that could potentially relate to land use in the wider area of Stanion villa.
