Abstract/Summary
Archaeological Services WYAS (ASWYAS) was commissioned to carry out a geophysical (magnetometer) survey of a small lawned area at Croyland Gardens, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, in advance of the construction of a children’s play area. The survey data was characterised by extremely strong magnetic readings predominantly due to the effects of prevailing solid geology exacerbated by the proximity of steel safety barriers and other modern features around the perimeter of the survey area. Against this strong magnetic background no anomalies of archaeological potential could be identified. An archaeological watching brief was later maintained during preparatory groundworks for the new play area. No archaeological features or finds were identified during the groundworks other than a limestone rubble plinth foundation of unknown date in two of the post-hole foundations. These two post-holes were re-located leaving the feature in situ.
