Abstract/Summary

The archaeological desk-based assessment for land at Rothwell, Northamptonshire, in advance of proposed development, has shown that the application site is located in an area of uncertain archaeological potential. The Northamptonshire Sites and Monuments Record shows that an area of allotments existed within the study area through the twentieth century. The surrounding area contains other sites of more recent nature, as well as a series of cropmarks of possible prehistoric date, representing settlement and field systems. Previous fieldwalking along the route of the A14 across the northern part of the study area did not recover any finds, although an undated hollow was recorded. The absence of known significant archaeological remains within the proposed development area, however, may simply reflect the lack of previous fieldwork.
