Abstract/Summary

The Environment Partnership (TEP) Ltd was instructed by MCW Architects on behalf of Northampton Homes Partnership to carry out a programme of historic building recording at the Maidwell Building, Avenue Campus, St George's Avenue, Northampton, ahead of a partial demolition and redevelopment of the former College building. The building was constructed at the northern edge of Northampton town centre as a purpose-built College, in three main phases between 1932 and 1937. The building was originally intended as a complete quadrangle however owing to funding limitations the planned south range was not constructed at this time. The building was executed in a neo-Georgian style with restrained decoration on the publically visible south-facing entrances but was generally plain across the main elevations, and was constructed with a steel frame, predominantly clad in gault brick with cast stone dressings. A south range was eventually added in 1959-61, enclosing the central yard and completing the quadrangle. This was in a contrasting modern style but care was taken by the architects to ensure the new building worked sympathetically with the existing design.
